The Healing Christ

(Part of Lent series).

1) Etymology of Healing in the OT and NT

In the OT, God is understood as the Healer in the Old Testament scriptures. The Hebrew title for the healer-God was Jehovah Ropheka which means the Lord our healer or the Lord who heals (Exodus 15:22-26). “Rophe” = to heal, implying holistic healing: physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual.
In the New Testament, the Greek word, therapeuo referred to heal, treat, care for. Jesus evidences the breaking of the Kingdom of God through his teaching, preaching and the accompanying healing ‘signs and wonders”

2) In the OT God promises healing to his people. In the book of Psalms 107:19-21, we read about the people crying out to God and how God healed them. Other references include Psalm 103:2-4, 30:2, 34:17ff. Other OT references
Exodus 23:25,15:26; Jeremiah 17:14, 33:6; Isaiah 57:18-19, 2 Chronicles 7:14-15.
Proverbs 4:20-22 and Psalm 147:3 refer to spiritual and emotional healing.

3) In the NT, Jesus went throughout Galilee, “….teaching, proclaiming the Good News and healing every disease.” He healed the sick, the lame, blind, deaf, mute He brought forgiveness to people who were living in sin. Jesus also set people free from their bondage to sin - “….sin no more!” In essence Jesus offered wholeness
to people whose lives were hollow and lifeless.

4) The diseases of humanity today - aside from Covid-19 - racism, poverty, prejudices, apathy, human trafficking, all forms of violence, greed, selfishness, fraud, corruption etc. Jesus brings healing to those who are powerless to help themselves and are willing to receive the same.
